The Retired-United Teachers of Northport Website was presented an Award of Distinction at the 2017 Communications Awards Celebration on August 12. Webmaster Linda Quinn accepted the award at the celebration luncheon at the NYSUT headquarters in Albany.

Sponsored by NYSUT United, the Communications Awards recognize outstanding NYSUT local union and chapter publications, websites and social media. Entries were judged on content that is both useful and well designed. In-service and retiree units were judged separately — First Place and two Awards of Distinction were presented in each category.

Call for Artists — The Long Island Museum announces an open call to artists & artisans for the 2017 Holiday Celebration Gala & Silent Auction.

This annual event raises funds to support museum initiatives such as education programs, exhibitions and LIMarts activities. For over 35 years,Child Abuse Prevention Services (CAPS), and a dedicated core of volunteers have been working together to keep every child safe from harm, and Retired-United Teachers of Northport member Teddy Emmanuel is one of the volunteers. Caps is Long Island’s leading resource on the prevention of child abuse and neglect and provider of youth violence prevention to all K-12 Nassau and Suffolk schools.

RC23 is please to present Joy Squires with NYSUT’s Community Service Award for 2017. Joy is a retired Elwood elementary school teacher and district elementary science coordinator. As an active teacher, Joy created an ecological laboratory and an elementary science lab in two elementary schools. She was a finalist for NYS Teacher of the Year and Suffolk County Elementary Science Teacher of the Year.

 

Joy has been a volunteer chairperson of the Huntington Conservation Board for over thirty-five years, which evaluates all proposed land use changes for properties in the Open Space Index for

A public service announcement for our members — If you do not already process a Lifetime America the Beautiful National Parks & Federal Recreational Lands Senior Pass now is the time to get one. The passes currently cost $10, but the price will increases to $80 on August 28. A new $20 annual Senior Pass will become available at the same time.

U.S. citizens or permanent residents 62 years or older are eligible for the Senior Pass. The annual and lifetime Senior Passes provide access to more than 2,000 recreation sites managed by six Federal agencies.
