Dennis Flamenbaum retired from the post of RC 23 president July. Stepping into the post of chapter president is Ellen Burke, who has served as vice president. 

Members of the executive honored Dennis with a champagne  toast at his retirement luncheon,  July 16th at the Garden Grill in Smithtown.  Dennis was surprised at the turn out of 30 attendees and was obviously touched by all the cards and notes of best wishes presented to him from members and the  a gift card from the Council.  At sad and happy event - happy that Dennis and his family are embarking on a new phase of their lives - sad

The AFT executive council voted overwhelmingly on July 11 to endorse Hillary Clinton in the 2016 Democratic primary for president of the United States. The AFT is the first national union to endorse a presidential candidate this year. NYSCUT has announced that with 566 school districts reporting, voters adoped 558 school budgets and defeated just eight, for a pass rate of 99 percent. In 2014 98.2 percent of the budgets passed, and in 2013 the passage rate was 95.3 percent.

This week, the Senate passed the Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act of 2015 to repeal the Sustainable Growth Rate (SGR) formula that determines Medicare physician payments and extend the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) for two years. Congress has acted 17 times to temporarily prevent drastic payment cuts resulting from use of the SGR formula. The “doc fix” bill replaces the SGR with alternative, value-driven payment strategies. This is good news for people with Medicare, who need to know their doctors will be there when they need them.

NEW YORK GOV. CUOMO DROPS TO LOWEST SCORE EVER, QUINNIPIAC UNIVERSITY POLL FINDS; GOVERNOR LOSING SCHOOL BATTLE TO TEACHERS’ UNIONS

A tough battle with teachers’ unions over the future of New York State schools is taking its toll on Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who begins his second term with his lowest job approval rating ever, 50 39 percent, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today.

This compares to a 58 32 percent job approval rating in a December 22 survey by the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University.

JOAN PERRINI was recently appointed as NYSUT Retiree Services Consultant in Suffolk County.  This will be a new direction for her after serving for 9 years as President of Retiree Council 21.
